Nowadays, Smartphones are usually thin and light. Well, there is a change incoming - a change which will make smartphones even more thinner and lighter. Thanks to Sharp's new screen technology.
The Japanese electronics company has already started mass production of "in-cell type touch displays," which include both LCD and the touch sensor - that are usually fitted separately. Since Sharp's new displays contain both LCD and the touch sensor together, they will require less space for fitting which will result in making smartphones more lighter and thinner.
"The in-cell type touch display, however, has the touch sensor function built into the LCD, thus enabling thinner and lighter displays. This also gives more design freedom to smartphone manufacturers," the company explained.
Sharp's new displays are initially for smartphones - that's an initial step. But they do plan to bring the innovation to desktop PCs and tablets too.
In case you don't know, Sharp is the same company which built displays for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+. It also does manufacture components for other companies.
