Gamescom 2015: Intel Launches 6th-Gen i5 and i7 Processors


Intel has just released its first two 6th-gen Core i5 and i7 processors. These two are the first from the 6th-gen family - codenamed Skylake. The new processors are designed "specifically for gamers and performance enthusiasts."

The quad-core Core i7-6700K and Core i5-6600K are clocked at 4.0 GHz and 3.5 GHz respectively. Both processors do fully support Intel's Z170 chipset. Nevertheless, there is full DDR4 memory support too. The processors will require a new CPU socket - LGA 1151. And both processors have a TDP of 91W.

Intel has also announced that unlocked 6th-gen processor "K" SKU for enthusiasts notebooks later this year. Keep in mind that this will be the first unlocked mobile SKU. We will tell you more if the company says more about the processor.

Anyways, Let's come to the pricing. The Core i5-6600K is priced at $243 whereas the Core i7 6700K has a price tag of $350. And yes, the new LGA 1151 and Z170 chipset simply means that you will need another motherboard if you are going to buy one of these CPUs.
